The Peer Mentoring Program assigns experienced students to help first-year freshmen make the transition to life as a college student.
The mission of the Bluefield State College Peer Mentor Program is to foster excellence through social development among first-year college students. Peer mentors promote success by providing support and guidance while being a positive role model for new and transfer students. Through the mentoring process, first-year students will learn about leadership development opportunities, the importance of social interaction as a means of networking, as well as developing successful study practices. Mentors help to ensure all first-year students are provided with the opportunity to involve themselves in all facets of the institution. The program is dedicated to empowering first-year students through the understanding of other cultures, enhancing his/her community through civic engagement, perseverance in scholastic endeavors, and personal growth.
Students can expect to participate in group activities that are designed specifically for first-year students. First-year students are expected to meet with their mentor at least once per month during the academic calendar year. Students will be contacted by their mentor periodically by telephone. Students will receive emails from their mentors at least once per week to provide information about campus activities, important dates, and area events.
